Documentary photographer, author & public speaker, Matthew Willman, brings to his audience the remarkable true story of his journey to one day shake the hand of Nelson Mandela. This goal to meet Mandela gave birth to a professional career in documentary photography. For over 21 years Willman's work across Southern & East Africa has afforded him the opportunity to engage intimately with a cross section of communities on the periphery of society. Willman reveals not only his work with Nelson Mandela as a commissioned photographer to this great man but also his deep understanding of his subject matter that is today highly regarded by the NGO sector around the world. Willman has gained over 20 years’ experience working for some of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of visual communication, development, visual arts and leadership. Clients include: Oxfam International, The World Health Organisation, The Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Vodafone Foundation, Robben Island Museum and The European Commission. Willman’s greatest achievement is his contribution to the recording of the process of South Africa’s democratic change as a commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Foundation working with Mr Mandela himself. This afforded him many incredibly and intimate experiences with Nelson Mandela. His collection of work is now central to the Mandela Centre of Memory & Presidential Library in Johannesburg.
